The Greenbelt Elementary PTA runs a used-book sale every year as part of the Greenbelt Labor Day Festival. We often have more than 20,000 books for sale, all donated during the month of August by members of the community.
If you’re new to the school, or the area, this sale brings in substantial funds that enable our organization to help the school in many ways that would not otherwise be possible. This tradition has been ongoing for 50 years now – and it can’t continue without the invaluable help of parent and community volunteers like YOU!
Our books are never seen by dealers before the sale opens on the Friday of Labor Day weekend. No advance sales will be entered into.
At the end of the sale, all unsold books will be sold to a book dealer or donated.
2017 Contact Information

For Book Donors:
Please bring the books to the Greenbelt Co-op Supermarket in Roosevelt Center from August 1 to 31. We can pick up large donations in the 20770 area. Do not bring the books to the school without calling the number above first, as a PTA member must meet you there. Do not ask the school staff for help; their job is getting the school ready for classes. Donations of books are tax-deductible; please ask for a receipt if you believe your donation is worth more than $250.
We are happy to receive fiction and nonfiction, children’s books, games, puzzles, DVDs, CDs, books on tape, and vinyl.
New donation guidelines for 2017: We will not accept VHS tapes, music cassette tapes, magazines, phone books, encyclopedia sets, or out-of-date computer manuals.
Come to the Greenbelt Labor Day Festival on Labor Day weekend.
The festival takes place at 101 Centerway, Greenbelt, MD. Please note that the sale does not take place at the school.
Labor Day Weekend, Friday evening to Monday afternoon. For exact hours, please check the Greenbelt Labor Day Festival Book Sale page.
We might close due to rain as we do not want the books to get wet.
On Friday, during setup, we have a strictly enforced “Do Not Touch the Books!” policy until 6pm when the sale opens.
We accept CASH ONLY. We cannot accept checks or credit cards at this time.
Friday and Saturday:
$2.00 Hardcover, DVDs, CDs
$1.00 Paperback or Other (videos, puzzles, etc.)
Sunday = dollar sale! Everything is a dollar!
Everything is free! We ask that customers consider making a donation to the GES PTA.
The books are sorted into boxes, in the following categories: Fiction, Nonfiction, Children’s, Media (DVDs, CDs, records, games & puzzles), Cooking, Crafts & DIY, and Vintage (books printed before 1960), History, Biography & Autobiography, and Foreign Language.
No “deals” or “discounts” on Friday through Sunday.
Sales tax included in the prices. On Monday, donations will be accepted at buyers’ discretion for all books. Cleanup and recycling starts at 4 pm on Monday. Please come to get books before 4 pm; you will not be allowed to look for books during the cleanup.
Any additional donations are gratefully accepted. The PTA supports a wide range of activities in the school, and donations are tax-deductible. Please tell the cashiers if you are making an additional donation, so that we do not pay sales tax on it.
The Greenbelt Labor Day Festival is the largest event of its kind in Maryland, with 20,000 people in attendance. There are rides, entertainment, food, art and photo shows, children’s events and sports. To get to the festival, park at Eleanor Roosevelt High School on Greenbelt Road, and take the free festival shuttle, or a 10-minute walk across the pedestrian bridge over the B-W parkway and down Gardenway to the city center.
For PTA Members:
This is our big fundraiser. Typically we make about $10,000 each year. In 2013 and 2014 we grossed $12,000. Consider volunteering your time now so that we can do less fundraising later!
