Rafael’s Race 1K & 5K is This Saturday – Run & Drawing Prizes Support Greenbelt Elementary School!!
This Saturday, October 7th, we invite you to run or walk with us as we remember the life of Rafael Martins, a 4th grade student at Greenbelt Elementary School (GES) who passed away in 2009 from a rare disorder called VATER syndrome. On one of Rafael’s last days at school he enjoyed a field trip so the money we raise helps all GES students attend educational field trips.
The weather for Saturday looks perfect for the race so please register to join us. You can also register on the day of the race, but please arrive by 8:30AM.
We are also selling drawing tickets for prizes like a weekend getaway, Washington Nationals tickets, Newseum tickets, Bee Yoga Fusion classes and more.
Calling all Volunteers!
This great event also needs volunteer help! Please sign up to volunteer so this race can be a success. We still need several more course marshals (stand on the course to direct and cheer on runners) as well as a few more people to help with post-race refreshments. Students can also earn service hours for volunteering. Sign up here – http://bit.ly/RafaelsRaceVolunteer
Our first PTA meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, October 3 at 7pm in the Media Center (Library). Meetings last about 60-90 minutes, and we always love to see new faces! Free child care is available in the gym. Come learn more about what’s going on at GES, and how you can support our school and your child.
Please join your GES PTA in the 2017 Rafael’s Race in order to raise money for student field trips.
Rafael Martins was a student at Greenbelt Nursery School and Greenbelt Elementary School. He was born with a rare disease called VATER syndrome and passed away on October 20, 2009 while he was in the 4th grade. In 2011, teachers, parents, and friends of Greenbelt Elementary School started a race in his honor.
The 1K fun run/walk and 5K race raise funds to support student field trips at Greenbelt Elementary School and provides a donation to Camp Sunshine, a retreat for kids with life- threatening illnesses and their families. Drawing tickets are also sold ($2 each or 6 for $10) at the school and Co-op Grocery store for prizes like tickets to the Newseum, baseball games and more. T-shirts are also available for sale. Students (current & former), parents, friends and community members are all invited to participate or volunteer.

5K — $20 ($25 day of registration)
1K — $10 ($12 day of registration)
